Good and Easy Death

How disastrous would it be to wake up in a hospital bed, being paralyzed and unable to see, and only to hear your relatives cry; in addition, from time to time you’re experiencing excruciating pain, so painful that you can't even react nor cry. I ask you, how would you feel? Does it feel convenient? Is it a hindrance to your daily living? Can you withstand the excruciating pain that you’re experiencing? That you can’t even do anything without any assistance. Now I ask you again, how do you feel? Do you feel and think that your life has no worth? That it’s better to end your life? Well, in reality, this is something anyone needs to imagine. This is being experienced by people who are nearly dying. These people should be able to make their own choices and have control over their own lives. Euthanasia is a term unknown many to us. It came from the Greek work that means “Good Death” and “Gentle and Easy Death”. Self-imposed death in a relatively painless and merciful way. This word has come to be used for “Mercy Killing”. Euthanasia should be legalized here in The Philippines and here are the reasons that justifies why it should be legalized here. I believe that everyone has the right to decide on how they want to live and die. Neither the doctors nor the Government should decide for you on how you want to live or not, since it’s not their lives and they’re not in the patient’s situation. They give us the liberty to choose our job, family, and our religion. Why shouldn’t they give us the right to decide on how we want to live or die? When in fact, that’s the first right we should have. Second, Euthanasia frees up Hospital beds and resources. Having a terminally ill patient is a huge wasteful drain of resources; in fact, a hospital in America, stated that having a numerous amount of terminally ill patients are truly costly and consume spaces. Why put your resources on these patients that don’t have the desire to live, and have the willingness to die? Instead, put the resources into the patients to those who do.Thus, the resources should be re-allocated for further research of the patient’s illness for future generations. Imagine the patient’s contribution to the research for a new cure, that if the patient is willing to be researched it can help to find the cure for that specific disease. In addition, if the patient has a healthy organ, he/she can help the people who is in dire need of transplant. On only the patient can have his/her gentle and easy death, but also helps other people who are in need. Families of individuals suffering from such diseases see their bright, happy relatives reduced to a shadow of their former self. The patient feels weak, exhausted and loses the will to fight. Muscles waster away, appearance changes and the patient starts to look older, becomes confused, no longer recognizes family and friends. The sufferer loses mobility, has difficulty with speaking, swallowing and breathing. Third reason for legalizing Euthanasia, we go back to why we have Euthanasia,.Terminally ill means terminally ill. No matter how many and how long medications will be used for the patient, eventually he/she will die. That’s the sad reality and the sad truth. The pain medications that are being used to alleviate symptoms and lessen the pain often have unpleasant side effects. It is not as if they are really “living” during this time; they are merely waiting to die.The patient faces a long, slow, and painful death, surely, it is much kinder to spare them put an end to their sufferings and allow them to end their lives comfortably and grant them a gentle and easy death. It has been argued that people on life support and people who experiencing terminal illness resolves to undergo Euthanasia as the best choice. It helps them in relieving them from pain and misery. Imagine how many patients will be helped if you allow them to have a peaceful death. Imagine how many family families will be thankful for allowing their relatives to have a good death.  The resources that will be saved and re-allocated for greater use. The spaces that will be used for other patients in the hospitals. The research that will help the society to find a better and more efficient cure for that disease And here are the reasons that justifies why I believe that Euthanasia should be legalized here in The Philippines for the sake of the patient’s rights, life, relatives, and family.
